I let the kids use their notebooks on the test. GASP! I know. I am shocked too.

Day 42: The Desk Art Continues
Today we were working on posters in groups to hang around the classroom as reviews for the test the following day. I have one class in particular that really loves to be off task and draw beautiful pictures on the desk using white board markers. I take pictures of them because they're cool.
Love my Disney Characters |
Bae's looking good. And by good I mean one of those scary Bratz dolls. |
The posters are what they should have been doing. :) |
Day 39: Calculating Speed
We are about to study radians and how that relates to circular motion and its speed. To intro the idea of speed, I had the kids unroll a 100 ft tape measure and try to roll it up at 1 mph. They had to do some conversions, and it was good thinking and movement for them. Once we did one trial, they knew they either needed to speed up or slow down. Some students even calculated it first to see how many seconds it needed to take them to roll up the tape measure.

Day 36: Straw Towers
I only got to see one class today because of PSAT testing. I decided to have them do the straw tower challenge. I found a version online that charged the kids for the amount of supplies they used. They had to calculate how much they were spending, and they had to keep their tower under a budget.
When they were finished, I placed a book on their towers, and it had to hold up the book for 10 seconds. Only 2 groups were successful, probably because I didn't really give them enough time. It was fun to watch them think together.

Not terrible, but it didn't hold up the book |
It died. |
Best one |
This one held the lighter book. |
This group was not full of engineers, and that's ok. It was a fun looking design. |

Day 33: More Rational Functions
In the process of making our rational function wall art, I noticed this particular group made theirs look like baby shower invitations. Silly.
And then later in the day, this happens. These are 18 year olds and my class officers. No. Words.

Day 32: Rational Function Wall Art
The kids made pretty rational function wall art to hang in the hallway. Markers and glue: not just for elementary school.

Day 29: New Door Decorations
I added my six weeks A students' awards to the door. It was a great idea until kids came in and out of my room every period. Some of them fell off. :( They're moving to a new location next six weeks.
Day 27: Rational Functions
I really wanted some meaning behind why a rational function has a hole vs. an asymptote, so I made the kids write explanations. Worked pretty well with the exception of kids complaining that I'm making them write in math class.
